Honorary Doctorate Nominations for the 2019 World Indigenous Nations University (WINU)
The World Indigenous Nations University (WINU) is pleased to invite nominations for its two Honorary Doctorates – the Doctor of Education (EdD) to Indigenous Educators or Indigenous-serving Educators, and its Doctor of Education (EdD) to Indigenous Elders/Knowledge Holders – to acknowledge their significant contributions and life-long service to the cause of Indigenous education and development in our respective tribal nations and Indigenous communities, schools, and institutions worldwide.
We invite nominations for each category from each of the 8 membership regions of WINU. We invite you to nominate those individuals (female and/or male) who meet the selection criteria as set forth in the attached 2019 WINU Honorary Doctorate Nomination Form, in recognition of their often tireless work, many times unnoticed, and sometimes at great personal sacrifice.
Please feel free to disseminate this announcement and the attached nomination form to your WINU Education Region, and your respective tribal governments, associations, organizations, and consortiums for their inclusion and assistance in recognizing the accomplishments of those individuals who merit our respect and gratitude for their exemplary lives of service and humility.
The Honorary Doctorates are:
Honorary Doctorate to Indigenous Educators or Indigenous-serving Educators that is earned through life long academic endeavors for the benefit of Indigenous peoples both nationally and internationally; and/or
Honorary Doctorate to Indigenous Elders/Knowledge Holders of WINU member countries.

Recipients Confirmed: April 30, 2019
Awards Conferred: July 31 – August 5, 2019
Nominators and Recipients are invited and encouraged to attend the 2019 WINU Awards Ceremony to be held during the 2019 WINHEC/WINU Annual General Meetings set for July 31 2019 to August 5, 2019 at Hualien, Taiwan.
If Awardee is not able to attend in person, arrangements can be made for In-Country Award Ceremony. More information is to come.

Miigwech to the Sami organizers of our WINHEC AGM, World Indigenous Research Education
Conference and the International Youth Camp! Staff, family and friends of the Sami High School and Reindeer Husbandry School and the Sami University of Applied Sciences welcomed us in a most astonishing way!
Evaluations have been reviewed and by all accounts, our gathering was a huge success. It takes organizers to prepare a space and of course all of us to fill the space. What a beautiful WINHEC family!!!!!
Sami Education Conference May 30th – June 1st – Diehtosiida, Kautokeino, Norway
Sámi allaskuvla will host an international conference: Sámi Education Conference: Reshaping Approaches to Indigenous Education. The aim of the conference is to share experiences from the indigenous world within the field of education. The conference will present stories from Sámi early childhood education, Sámi schools, Sámi teacher education and other Sámi and international indigenous education institutions.
Themes of the conference are:
We call for contributions that are about Sámi and indigenous education in early childhood institutions, primary schools, higher education, and other educational institutions.
The conference will be arranged around duddjon & lávostallan sessions (traditional craft works, knowledge exchange and hanging out in the lávvu), keynote speeches, paper, poster and film presentations and workshops sessions.
Who are the Indigenous Peoples of the World?
WINHEC, the World Indigenous Nations Higher Education Consortium was launched with the signing of the Declaration on Indigenous People’s Higher Education by the members of the Executive Board at Delta Lodge, Kananaskis Calgary in Alberta Canada during the World Indigenous Peoples Conference on Education (WIPCE) 4-10 August 2002.
The founding state/country members present were Australia, the states of Hawai’i and Alaska and the American Indian Higher Education Consortium of the United States, Canada, the Wānanga of Aotearoa (New Zealand) and Saamiland (North Norway).
