The IISE working group of Language Policies of the University of Pittsburgh will host the upcoming International Brown Bag with William Rivers, PhD, discussing current movements in Indigenous languages, including America’s Languages Working Group.
The United Nation Proclamation of International Decade of Indigenous Languages invites us to initiate ideas for cultural preservation and resource mobilization of Indigenous languages for sustainable development, peace building, and reconciliation.

The Canadian Commission for UNESCO and the UNESCO Chair in Community-Based Research and Social Responsibility in Higher Education are collaborating in supporting an international webinar series in support of the UNESCO consultations on the creation of a Recommendation on Open Science, an international normative document to be adopted by the UNESCO General Conference in November of 2021.
The webinar series is based on a brief prepared by Florence Piron (Université Laval), Leslie Chan (University of Toronto), Lorna Williams (University of Victoria, Lil’wat First Nation), Rajesh Tandon (PRIA India) and Budd Hall (University of Victoria).
The title of the brief is “Open Science Beyond Open Access: For and With Communities A Step Towards the Decolonization of Knowledge”. Available here.
Greetings to you all the family of WINHEC and WINU. Our anticipation of a joyous reunion in Taiwan in late July – Early August is tempered by the loss of our dear elders Dr. Delbert Horton and Dr. Anne Leisha.
Delbert was the strong support for not only our sister Laura, but for all of the WINHEC family, as he was one of the pillars that helped to progress our collective efforts since the early days of WINHECs formation.
We all had a close and treasured relationship with the ‘big-man’ and are devastated at his passing.
I acknowledge that these are sentiments that would be shared by all of the WINHEC family and many others as this amazing man had the ability to touch each and every heart by his kind and gentle demeanour and his commitment to bringing about change in education for First Nations Peoples, not only in his own homeland, but across the world. Our hearts go out to Laura and family and our wider Canadian community who have hosted us so many times with Delbert there as the rock.
